Naarm/Melbourne's post-punk scene is a cauldron of raw energy and social commentary, and Favoured State are stirring the pot with their blistering new single 'Look Who's Talking'. The track dissects the hypocrisy of privileged figures lecturing others on success, despite never having walked the same path.
"Look who's talking thematically is talking about the irony of those in positions of power feeling as though they can encourage people to reach success through 'hard work' when in reality their positions have been handed to them," explains Favoured State. "It just addresses the irony that they preach a path they didn't have to walk themselves."
This frustration seethes in the lyrics. Lines like, "I wanna be here and playing this game / But outside it's not the same," reveal a longing for inclusion, a desire to challenge those dispensing hollow advice. Favoured State's sonic choices match the song's incendiary message. 'Look Who's Talking' explodes with the frenetic, untamed energy of Melbourne's best post-punk. The band reveals, "the manic energy is supposed to symbolize this wildness."
Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Calum Newton (whose credits include Amyl & The Sniffers), the track hints at the potential of Favoured State's upcoming debut EP 'It's A Mess', slated for a May 15th release. Their fierce live reputation, honed at events like Brunswick Music Festival and opening slots for Berlin's S.U.G.A.R., suggests big things are in store.
While relatively new, Favoured State are rapidly making themselves known. With their blend of astute social observation and unbridled musicality, this is a band to watch in the year ahead.
