Kaurna/Adelaide's experimental-punk outfit Placement are back with a bang, unleashing their new single 'Inertia / Heavy Lids' after an electrifying 18-month stint sharing stages with the likes of Superchunk, Quicksand, Party Dozen and DZ Deathrays. This captivating track pulsates with brooding, smoky rhythms, haunting sax howls and a stoic vocal delivery reminiscent of Patti Smith, exploring themes of repetition and the struggle to break free from monotonous cycles.
Placement's unique blend of raw punk energy and experimental tones creates a magnetic force that pulls you into each haunting section of 'Inertia / Heavy Lids'. Vocalist Mailia explains the song's powerful message, "This song speaks of desire, motivation and slipping away into the sleeping reality of inertia. We may begin full of emotion, full of passion and vigour, but somewhere along the way are we just doing what we’re doing because it’s what we have been doing? Does it still fill us, fulfil us?"
She continues, highlighting the struggle against the pull of routine, "The power of habit and ritual is strong, the inertia of daily life can propel us through a lot, past a lot. If we keep running towards the same things again and again, we should know what’s coming."
But there's more exciting news for Placement fans. The band have also announced their highly anticipated debut album 'Insect', set to drop later this year. With 'Inertia / Heavy Lids' offering a tantalising glimpse into the album's sonic landscape, listeners can expect an experimental journey filled with introspective and thought-provoking lyricism that hits as hard as their latest single.
Malia further elaborates on the album's themes, "Sometimes we are not really awake but sleepwalking through ritual, continuing the same comfortable routine, particularly if it is something that was once desirable to us. Maybe there’s a reason we sleepwalk. Maybe it is just our inertia, eyes glued shut with sleep while we stumble through the things we know.”
Placement have been making waves across the country with their ferocious live performances at festivals like Meadow Festival and Mountain Goat Valley Crawl. Their sound, a nod to the grimy 90s guitar bands, features infectious melodies and a rhythmic, often spoken vocal delivery that drives the groove through expansive storytelling, humour, and the poetry of everyday life.
Formed in Kaurna Yerta/South Australia, Placement have spent the last few years honing their craft, playing across Australia's East & South coasts and building a reputation for their captivating live shows. With numerous international supports under their belt, a busy touring schedule and a freshly finished debut album on the horizon, Placement are carving their own path through new creative frontiers in the Australian alternative scene.
