Siggy – ‘25th Century’

A band cast from the sun-kissed street of Los Angeles, Siggy first arrived with their acclaimed 1999 album, ‘Harlow’s Girl’. Built from some harsh proto-punk sounds, the album set the standard for years to come, ensuring that their return to the fore had a lot to live up to.

Titled ‘25th Century’, the album is a straight shot of rhythmic pulses and evolved, proto-rock sounds, kicking up the dust over ten tracks that traverse the themes of hope, fury, and the rank psychic pathology of the 21st century.

From the start, ‘25th Century’ fires on all cylinders, lashing out with classic, early punk vocals and constant, rising guitar tones. It’s an imposing, but brilliant sound, one that Siggy wield with confidence, exploring more contemporary proto-punk styles through standout single ‘Synesthesia’, a cut which conceptually paints in vibrant colour while lyrically unpacking the titular phenomenon. Elsewhere, the band keep you on tenterhooks with a sharp blend of raucous vocals that are wrapped around intellectually derived lyrics, creating a maelstrom of undeniable anthems.

Speaking of the new release, Siggy explained, “’25th Century’ brings a message grounded firmly in hope, with the fury and the rank psychic pathology of the 21st-Century. We don't have endless spins around the sun to leave our mark; will it be for the betterment of our progeny or "to die with some useless toys. ‘Synesthesia’ is an anthem to everything we do not yet know, from feeling our dreams in the color green to painting throaty lullabies from palettes of notes. If we do not yet understand the edge cases of our sensory processing, how much learning do we have to look forward to till we grock the likes of the free energy principle and string theory?”

Featuring a brilliant cover of Echo and the Bunnymen’s ‘Lips Like Sugar’ which contains all of the salacious murky atmosphere of the original, it is safe to say that Siggy’s comeback album has arrived with a seminal, and long missed, bang.
