Sydney's tireless live act The Buoys are finally ready to step fully into the spotlight with the announcement of their long-awaited debut album, 'Lustre', set to drop on July 12th. To celebrate, the band has unleashed their powerful new single 'Check Mate', complete with an energetic music video.
'Check Mate' delivers the band's signature blend of vulnerable lyrics and anthemic indie-rock. The track, co-written with Alex Lahey, burns with heartfelt intensity – a quality showcased in their recent, well-received Like A Version appearance on triple j. The Tas Wilson-directed video captures the raw energy of a carefree road trip with friends, mirroring the song's deep desire for connection.
The Buoys explain the inspiration behind their single: "'Check Mate' was inspired by my mates checking up on me when I was really burnt out. I think a lot of people can relate to the pressures of always being contactable by phone… I have some amazingly supportive friends, and this song is about feeling guilty for not being there for my friends in the same ways that they’re there for me."
'Lustre', recorded in New South Wales with Chris Collins, promises to showcase The Buoys' reputation as an electrifying live force. The album features previously released singles 'Subject A', 'Guard My Heart', and 'Settle Petal', exploring a range of emotions and influences that touch on indie, rock, punk, and more.
The band shared their thoughts on their debut, "Lustre is how light interacts with the surface of something. Think of light as experience, both good and bad, and yourself as the object. Your unique coating shapes how you interpret the world and others… Every song on this album is open to interpretation, so that the darkness and light can be absorbed in a way that's personal to you."
The Buoys' relentless work ethic has seen them release a string of EPs and singles, and tour extensively with international heavyweights like Arctic Monkeys, DMAs, IDLES, and Royal Blood. They've graced stages at Party In The Paddock, Laneway Festival, and Great Southern Nights.
Get ready to experience The Buoys at their most expansive – the release of 'Lustre' is sure to cement their status as Aussie indie-rock icons. Dive into the heartfelt energy of 'Check Mate' now!
