Ben Joyner, the Los Angeles-based filmmaker and musician originally from North Carolina, has just released a gem of a single, ‘Audrey (Nice Name)’, from his debut EP ‘Got My Drums Back Vol. 1’. This track is a delightful blend of indie-folk with a touch of blues, all wrapped up in a raw, almost nostalgic production that hints at Joyner's Southern roots.
The song has a charming, effortless feel, bringing to mind the likes of Elliott Smith and Bob Dylan, but with a unique, rugged edge all Joyner's own. He manages to capture a raw vulnerability without ever becoming overly sentimental. It's like stumbling upon a dusty old vinyl in a hidden corner of a record store – familiar yet refreshingly new.
‘Audrey (Nice Name)’ is beautifully understated. The simple arrangement allows the emotion of the song to shine through, recalling the kind of visceral authenticity that made bands like Grandaddy and The Flaming Lips indie darlings. There's a cinematic quality to the storytelling, which isn't surprising considering Joyner's background in filmmaking. He knows how to craft a narrative, and this song unfolds like a perfectly formed short film.
Joyner describes the inspiration behind the song: "This is a song I wrote after seeing a Neil Young & Crazy Horse concert with my Mom. I mentioned the name of a girl I'd met to which she replied 'that's a nice name.' Which I thought was funny. It was born out of this feeling of being really into someone and wanting to tell your family about them but also trying to play it cool and take things slow." This sense of heartfelt yearning comes through beautifully in the lyrics, which are delivered with an intimacy that feels almost confessional.
‘Audrey (Nice Name)’ is a rare find: a love song that feels genuine and avoids cliché. It's a testament to Joyner's talent that he can create something so uncontrived and affecting. This single is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates honest, heartfelt music.
