Great Gable’s Third Album, ‘Small Fry’, Is A Sun-Drenched Delight

Great Gable has dropped their latest album, ‘Small Fry’, and it’s like a breath of fresh summer air. For those unfamiliar with the band, these West Aussie indie rockers have been the soundtrack to lazy beach days and sun-soaked nights for the past eight years. If you’re even thinking of skipping this release, 'Think Again Motherf*cker'.

This time around, Great Gable aims to capture the essence of their home state. The album was recorded at Blackbird Studios in Perth, marking their first hometown stint since 2018. With the help of producer Dave Parkin, the band has crafted a record that showcases the vibrant spirit of Western Australia.

From the very first track, ‘Small Fry’ invites listeners to reflect on treasured memories. It’s a nostalgic journey that’s not just about looking back but doing so with a smile. Take ‘Muck About’, for instance - its playful energy perfectly encapsulates those carefree teenage days. Then there’s ‘Blue Eyes’, a track that evokes a sense of yearning for unforgettable nights.

The standout moment has to be ‘Hometown’. Lead singer Alex Whiteman draws listeners into his world, reminiscing about his upbringing in Bunbury. He shares, “It’s pretty much me remembering what it was like to grow up down there,” and you can almost feel the warmth of those memories washing over you. It’s a celebration of the past, captured in bright, sunny melodies.

The album’s overall vibe is undeniably upbeat. “The overall feeling of Small Fry is probably a bit happier than our past records,” Alex notes, and that joy is infectious. Lead single ‘Best Friend’ is an ode to those special relationships that light up our lives. It’s hard not to break out in a grin while listening.

But ‘Small Fry’ isn’t just about nostalgia; it also offers hidden gems for those who listen closely. Tracks like ‘I Would Rather Be Happy Than Right’, recorded on Alex’s home tape deck, bring a charming, lo-fi quality to the album. The slide guitar on ‘Asleep’ adds depth to the record, creating a warm, enveloping sound.

In short, ‘Small Fry’ is a celebration of fond memories and the promise of good times to come. Whether you’re wandering sandy shores or gazing at the stars, this album is the perfect soundtrack to both cherished memories and adventures yet to unfold. Great Gable has truly outdone themselves, and we’re all the better for it.
