Sydney-based trio, Hot Work, are gearing up to release their long-awaited new EP, ‘The Friends We Make Along The Way’, teasing five new tracks of shimmering sun-drenched melodies, chilled-out vibes, and rolling, kaleidoscope tones. As fans of the band surely know, this isn't your typical surf-rock, though. These guys have a knack for throwing in unexpected twists and turns, keeping you on your toes while you soak up the good vibes.
Set for release sometime in the future, the band gave us an early glimpse into the EP, including lead single ‘My Baby’, which is set to be released later this month on the 20th of December. Think raw, melodic sounds infused with sweeping nostalgic tones and a touch of grit – a deft assembly that forms into five tracks perfect for hazy summer afternoons.
Opening with ‘Mango Ice’, Hot Work easily set the tone, layering shimmering guitars and dreamy vocals backed by shared vocal harmonies and a slow-etched tropical feel. It’s a fitting, smooth, and slightly eclectic sound, blending surf-rock with sultry soulful tones. The lead single, 'My Baby', is a funk-driven gem with a psychedelic edge, complete with an unexpected Mean Girls sample that'll make you chuckle. It's catchy, it's quirky, and it's guaranteed to get stuck in your head.
Elsewhere on the EP, ‘Friend’s Don’t Let Friends’ and ‘Riley’s Six Days of Hell’ take the band’s sound into heavier territories. It’s a balance between the vintage flair and more expressive lyrics that shine, showcasing a blossoming contrast that adds depth and flavour. While the music sticks firmly to the band’s chilled, pop vibes, that’s something haunting and life-affirming about the delivery.
Ending with 'Couldn't Look You In The Eye', a soft and reflective close, it perfectly sums up the EP as a timeliness, nostalgic trip with a fresh perspective. Together, Michael van Dyk, Jack McPhee, and Riley Pierce have effortlessly blended old-school vibes with modern sounds, creating a unique listening experience that's both familiar and exciting.
While you will have to wait a while longer before you can get your hands on the full EP, keep an eye out for 'My Baby', dropping on December 20th, and be sure to check out the band’s debut album, ‘Boys Club’, which is available now.
