Jed Sutcliffe's ‘THE REMEDY' Offers a Wild Ride of Bold, Expressive Styles

Jed Sutcliffe's new EP, 'THE REMEDY', is here, and it presents a fascinating journey through the musical landscape. The Melbourne multi-instrumentalist, who admits to "wanting each song to have a different flavour," certainly achieves that in the EP. From the outset, we're thrown into a sonic cocktail that defies easy categorisation, leaning on different styles and sounds to make an indelible mark.

The title track, ‘The Remedy’, begins with a gorgeous juxtaposition of golden age swing and a classic Miles Davis interview. It’s an unexpected prelude of what is to come, drawing you in before lashing out with a grunge-infused onslaught. It's a bold move, setting the tone for an EP that refuses to be pinned down. Sutcliffe's vision, as he explains, involved writing everything and playing most of the instruments, with hired vocalists and Esmute on drums and mixing. This DIY approach results in a raw, unfiltered sound that feels intensely personal.

‘Postman Pot’ delivers a shot of adrenaline, a punk-fuelled romp that evokes the spirit of classic Australian pub rock. The howling guitar and rapid-fire rhythm section create a sense of urgency, a stark contrast to the more atmospheric tracks that follow. Then, ‘Void’ hits us with a dramatic shift, diving into a progressive metal realm where a pitch shifted guitar sings in siren tones and a darker, more intense energy rules.

In the latter half of the EP, ‘Sick Disease of Separation’ plunges you into a murky, grunge-laden atmosphere, reminiscent of early 90s alternative rock. The vocals, more subdued here, blend seamlessly with the layered instrumentals, creating a sense of brooding introspection. It’s a track that throws you into the heart of darker, grunge-laced sounds.

The EP then takes an unexpected turn with ‘Thistle’, a stripped-back acoustic track that showcases Sutcliffe's songwriting prowess. The lyrics, like "I wish I had more photographs, because they’re just a memory," resonate with a wistful sincerity. This closing track, with its heartfelt refrain, provides a moment of genuine emotional connection, proving that Sutcliffe's range extends beyond the heavy riffs and sonic experimentation.

While the EP's eclectic nature might leave some listeners feeling a little disoriented, it’s undeniable that Sutcliffe's passion and musical versatility shine through. 'THE REMEDY' is a testament to his desire to explore different genres, and while the transitions can be abrupt, the sheer ambition and originality make it a compelling listen.
