JJ Rane's River Runs Deep on Powerful New EP, ‘Back Into The River’

JJ Rane, a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer from Vancouver Island, Canada has recently shared his new EP, ‘Back In The River’, a potent release born from the isolation of the pandemic era. A very special project that was recorded remotely, the EP feels like a cathartic release, channelling the raw energy of early 2000s rock with a nod to the moody grit of the Pacific Northwest and JJ Rane’s own Western Canadian roots.

Built around an impressive line-up of musicians, including members of Sheryl Crow, Bush, and Chayce Beckhamm's bands, ‘Back Into The River’ is a snapshot of an elevated anthology, one that is deeply personal, but also wonderfully rich and collaborative. It’s an EP that goes beyond a solo endeavour, creating a rich and dynamic sonic landscape.

The EP opens with the title track, ‘Back Into the River’, a driving force of distortion and powerful vocals. JJ Rane's voice immediately commands attention, drawing the listener into his personal narrative. The band provides a robust backdrop, knowing precisely when to unleash and when to hold firm, showcasing impressive guitar work that resonates with an almost arena-rock grandeur. There's a distinct 90s spirit coursing through the track, a sense of raw emotion and unbridled energy.

Throughout, JJ Rane isn't afraid to wear his influences on his sleeve. Echoes of Soundgarden's ferocity can be heard in the sheer volume and intensity, and at times, JJ Rane’s vocals shimmer with that early grunge authenticity. Flashes of bands like Queens of the Stone Age shine in defiant twists and turns that add a hypnotic quality, but there’s more beneath the surface. There’s a current of early post-indie sleaze and alt-rock swagger, driving everything forward and carving out an impressive, nostalgic shade.

‘Hell of a Lie’ delivers a punchy beat undercut with a bluesy undercurrent that pulls the track forward, while ‘In the Middle of Two Worlds’ takes a surprising turn, revealing a soulful melodic touch. The arrangement offers a tender, reflective mood to take hold, before ‘Wake Up’ strips things back, focusing on a deep bassline that flows throughout the song's journey. The EP concludes with ‘Back into the River II’, a new version of the title track that artfully reimagines it into a thoughtful counterpoint to the opening intensity.

'Back Into The River' is an impressive glimpse into JJ Rane’s world. It’s an EP that is both personal and powerful, showcasing his distinctive voice and songwriting while paying homage to the music that shaped him. The heavy physicality of the performances, particularly on tracks like ‘Back Into the River’ and ‘Hell of a Lie’, leaves a lasting impression, ensuring it is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates the raw energy and emotional depth of classic alternative rock.
