The Currents' 'End of the World' Is Fearless Indie Rock from Ohio's Hottest New Band

The Currents, a fresh-faced four-piece from Toledo, Ohio, have burst onto the scene with 'End of the World', a track that fearlessly tackles life's biggest question: what's the point of it all? Formed just last year, the band – Luis Gomez, Tanner Wertz, Matt Cashin, and Emilio Alvarado – draw on a diverse range of influences, resulting in a sound that feels both familiar and excitingly new.

'End of the World' is a powerful exploration of vulnerability and anxiety. As Gomez explains, "It's not easy to write a song about one of your biggest fears... but with the beauty of music we were able to channel the anxiety, fear, and chaos of the subject." And channel it they do. The track opens with the stark lines, "What is the aim of being alive? 'Cause someday we will die," immediately setting the tone for a song that refuses to shy away from difficult moments and a deep dive into the human condition.

Musically, 'End of the World' is a masterclass in indie rock. Driving guitars and sharp rhythms provide a vibrant backdrop for Gomez's introspective lyrics, creating a captivating contrast between the song's raw vulnerability and its energetic instrumentation. Think early Arctic Monkeys meets The Killers, with a touch of Foals thrown in for good measure. There's a distinct blend of British, American, and Mexican influences at play, giving the track a unique flavour that sets it apart from the indie rock crowd.

While 'End of the World' marks the end of an era for The Currents, and won't be appearing on their debut album (expected in Fall 2025), it's a powerful statement of intent. This is a band that isn't afraid to delve into complex emotions and deliver them with musical sophistication. If 'End of the World' is anything to go by, The Currents are a band to watch.
