Whoa Sequoia, the solo project of Philadelphia-based musician Brandon Meyer, has released a cracking new single, ‘Hangry Birds’, and it’s got us hooked. The new track is the first taste of his upcoming album, ‘Pool of Love’, and if it's anything to go by, we're in for a treat.
A track that is both insanely catchy and easily enjoyable, ‘Hangry Birds’ is fuelled by a driving rhythm and infectious melody. It’s the kind of song that gets stuck in your head in the best way possible. But it's not just surface-level catchy; there's an introspective quality to the lyrics that adds depth and makes you want to listen closer.
Meyer's layered vocals blend seamlessly with the punchy synth lines and, of course, those blistering guitar solos that are a hallmark of his sound. He draws inspiration from a diverse range of artists, from classic rock legends to more contemporary indie influences, but he manages to create something that feels uniquely his own. You can hear echoes of the greats and flashes of familiarity, but ‘Hangry Birds’ sounds fresh and exciting.
Meyer, a guitarist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, has clearly poured his heart and soul into Whoa Sequoia. He's a true one-man band, playing all the instruments, producing and mixing the tracks, and even taking charge of the visuals.
‘Pool of Love’ marks his fourth release, and he’s described this batch of songs as having a "cool playfulness" that came through during the writing process, which mostly happened on his lunch breaks while teaching guitar. This playful energy is definitely present in ‘Hangry Birds’, but it's also coupled with a noticeable maturity in his songwriting.
If ‘Hangry Birds’ is anything to go by, ‘Pool of Love’ is going to be something special. It's an album that promises both catchy hooks and thoughtful songwriting, all wrapped up in a package of top-notch production.
Keep an eye out for ‘Pool of Love’ when it drops on April 18th through Java Street Records and be sure to follow Meyer today on Instagram.
