Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’

With millions of streams to their name, as well as industry acclaim throughout Australia and the world, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have shown no signs of slowing down in recent years, taking on the music industry with fuzzed-out riffs and wild, melodic sounds. Now, a new era beckons for the homegrown Australian band, and to kick it off, the group have shared new single ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’.

As with all Psychedelic Porn Crumpets’ music, ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’ originated in the kaleidoscopic creative brain of songwriter Jack McEwan, before being fleshed out further in his home studio. The sounds of ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’ take Psychedelic Porn Crumpets into slightly different territory, anchoring things in a heavier guitar-centric space.

Fuzzed out riffs that capture the wild essence of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets perfectly, ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’ marks a fine return for the band, who were only just thrilling audiences earlier in 2021 with their fourth album, ‘SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound’.

Speaking about the new single, Jack McEwan of the band explained, “After SHYGA! I wanted to write something a bit heavier, get back to the Sabbath roots and chug on a riff for yonks ‘til it hums like a Novocaine mantra. I wanted it to feel like it was constantly progressing, getting more chaotic with drones, swirling between dissonant layers and get the body jangling with a Tyson hook.”

“The lyrics weren't intentionally meant to be dark; I’ve always liked to keep our music upbeat and positive but some days it felt like everything was blurring into one, waiting for life to resume into some sense of normality. But what is normal? Change is good, variety is the spice of life and from these weird times, I can truly say I've never been happier. So, the Pisco of life continues, building with bulldozers, creating from rubble, chewing on bricks with a toothless optimism. It’s nice to feel rounded.”

To accompany the single, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets collaborated with Bristol-based animator Gina Tratt for the clip’s official video. Matching the vibe of the song, the ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’ video falls in line with the fantastical nature fans have come to love and respect about the band’s output.

Jack continued, “As soon as we saw Gina's work, we all really wanted to collaborate and work together on a project. The idea was to follow the drone aspect of the track, build a playful landscape for midnight YouTube trippers to gobble up while outlining the expendable nature of our mundane working routines; slice that up with some greedy corporate overlord whose main objective is to deplete the world of all resources for capitalistic gains and voila! You've got a Lava Lamp Pisco. Old mate Bezzy was the inspiration. Gina's an absolute hero! We love what she's created and hope that everyone enjoys our dark little episode.”

The track, premiering on BBC Radio 1 with Jack Saunders, comes with the announcement of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets’ return to international touring. The band is set to return to the UK and Europe in March and April 2022, their first extensive run of shows since the pandemic forced them off-road.

Since their formation and breakthrough in 2014, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have become one of Australia’s most formidable psych forces. Joining the wave of Australian artists bringing such an eclectic array of sounds to the global stage, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have become leaders in their own right, setting the bar higher and higher with each album release.
