A musician and writer who has played in some of Mexico’s most exciting independent bands, Ricardo Jacob is a self-confessed ‘explorer of exotic sounds and sensory experiences’ who has been fearlessly redefining the lo-fi world. A fiercely original talent, Ricardo has recently released a stellar solo endeavour, combining stark krautrock and Ethio-jazz sounds to deliver the brilliant four-track EP of ‘Mumberome’.
A unique instrumental piece that shines with the building sensation of visiting a desert in the middle of the night, ‘Mumberome’ is an expansive and tactile exploration of hypnotic guitar and shifting soundscapes. Armed with an aura of mystery that transforms with each composition, the release is perfectly placed and carefully orchestrated to draw you in and leave you speechless.
Tracks like ‘Hub’ and ‘Astatqé’ bring more depth to the release, emulating more traditional African sounds that blend modern and world music, combining styles and cultures in a way that is wonderfully reminiscent of Damon Albarn’s work on ‘Democrazy’. Further to this end, final track ‘Gojo’ revels in experimental sounds, glimpsing into the future while also paying homage to the timeless sounds of the past.
A deft and expansive release that stands apart from the mainstream, ‘Mumberome’ is available now from Ricardo’s Bandcamp page as both a digital download and a limited-edition, handmade CD.
A wonderfully talented artist, Ricardo stands out because he is not afraid to walk the less trodden paths, bolding stepping into new musical territories and shining a light on new sonic spaces. For more from Ricardo, make sure you follow him on his social media pages below.
