Singer-songwriter Alas de Liona has unveiled her highly anticipated second album, 'Gravity of Gold', a captivating journey through the landscapes of the human heart and mind. Released today on her own Deli Owner Records via Absolute Label Services, the 11-track album showcases de Liona's ethereal vocals and introspective songwriting amidst a tapestry of indie-pop and alt-rock sounds.
'Gravity of Gold' delves into the complexities of memory, dream, curiosity, loneliness, delusion, fear, and denial, all in the pursuit of understanding. Despite the weight of these themes, the album is instrumentally and melodically buoyant, offering a sense of lightness and hope through catchy pop hooks and empowering backing vocals. De Liona's versatility shines through as she navigates a spectrum of styles, from jaunty beach-rock to darker art-pop, all held together by consistent instrumentation, vocal tones, and lyrical flow.
"The tracks from 'Gravity of Gold' are intended to function as both stand-alone songs and part of the album's artistic entirety," explains de Liona. "Most of the songs are more up-tempo than my previous work and demonstrate a shift away from folk and into the indie pop/rock sphere, which is where I plan to develop my sound moving forward."
The album opens with the indie-pop gem '19.3', exploring the complexities of love in the face of adversity. The haunting folk/rock journey of 'Analogy' follows, navigating the labyrinth of memory and self-delusion, showcasing de Liona's introspective side.
The second single 'Violet' is a beachy tune with deceptively upbeat melodies masking deeper, more complex themes. The indie-pop ballad 'Vine Song' examines the dangers of loving an illusion, while 'Promises' offers a gritty alt-pop/indie-rock commentary on the pressures of social media.
'Driftwood' provides a moment of reflection, its chill sound creating the perfect backdrop for analysing the aftermath of relationships. This introspective mood continues with the downtempo ballad 'The Miller', exploring self-deception as a coping mechanism.
As the album nears its conclusion, 'Materia Medica' presents a melancholic piece contemplating self-medication and destructive patterns. 'Summer Rain' follows, an airy ode to insomnia and contemplation, its soaring melodies contrasting the weight of its themes.
The album closes with 'The Question', pondering life's existential queries, and 'The Alchemist's Son', examining the cost of pursuing one's dreams, serving as a fitting culmination to the journey that is 'Gravity of Gold'.
With 'Gravity of Gold', Alas de Liona has crafted an ethereal and introspective album that explores the depths of the human experience with both vulnerability and strength. The album is a testament to her growth as an artist and her ability to create music that is both thought-provoking and sonically captivating.
