Flavor Wave Dive into Funk-Fueled Self-Motivation with New Single

West Chester's alt-rock/indie darlings, Flavor Wave, are back with a bang and a hefty dose of funk-infused energy in their latest single, 'Motivation'. This five-piece band, composed of childhood friends turned musical comrades, have been making waves in the Greater Philadelphia area since 2021 with their unique blend of indie rock and vibrant artistic flair.

'Motivation' is an anthem for anyone battling feelings of stagnation and the fear of falling behind. Born out of a period of creative drought and personal frustration for drummer and vocalist Josh Speaker, the song explores the struggle of pushing past complacency and embracing change. "I wasn't where I wanted to be in life," Speaker confesses. "There were so many areas I wasn’t happy with, and I was afraid of the changes happening. But I knew the only way to make things better was to get up and make those changes myself."

This internal battle is mirrored in the song's dynamic vocal interplay, with Speaker and vocalist Kyle Loedel riffing off each other, creating a dialogue between self-doubt and encouragement. "I feel like the way Josh and I bounce off each other in the verses could insinuate that, while others can believe and motivate you, you have to first believe in yourself," Loedel explains.

Rhythm guitarist Patrick Blair sees 'Motivation' as a testament to the power of self-belief and transformation. "I’ve always felt that the song is about self-motivation, and not being afraid to change yourself for the better even though it's going to take effort and a lot of time," Blair shares. "The song is an inspiring one for the listener, and I think it’s important for everybody to take something positive away from it."

The song's infectious energy is undeniable. A powerful, funky guitar riff kicks things off, instantly grabbing the listener's attention. Lead guitarist Matthew Stretch recalls the riff's evolution, "It was the first thing that came to fruition when we were jamming, and it was important to me that we find a way to keep it and make it feel full in a recording setting. Live it worked well, but it was lacking something in the studio. Once we added an envelope filter, I felt like the part was perfect." This driving rhythm, combined with the fast-paced vocals and a soaring chorus, provides the perfect soundtrack for tackling any challenge.

Bassist Noah Montgomery sees 'Motivation' as a call to break free from repetitive cycles and embrace new beginnings. "To me, this song is about getting yourself out of a rut where you keep getting stuck on the same things over and over," he says.

Recorded throughout 2024 at Little Brother Audio in West Philadelphia and produced/mixed by Tyler Ripley, 'Motivation' marks an exciting new chapter for Flavor Wave. With the new year stretching ahead, filled with fresh opportunities and potential hurdles, there's no better time for Flavor Wave to unleash this burst of sonic energy and inspire listeners to take charge and pursue their goals.
