Joby Longyin Drops a Christmas Cracker with New Album, ‘Part Deux’

One after making his debut, Joby Longyin is back with a bang, and a few more unique twists. For his second album, ‘Part Deux’, it's safe to say he's turned the dial up to eleven, pushing forward with a “natural unnatural progression” of his world. Recorded in a whirlwind 48 hours at Le Studio Scotland, this album throws you headfirst into Longyin's unique brand of musical madness. Forget carefully crafted compositions and meticulous production; this is all about raw energy and spontaneous creativity captured in live takes.

From the get-go, Longyin makes it clear that ‘Part Deux’ is no ordinary album. ‘Swing Ming Sing’ kicks things off with an infectious electro-jazz-dance groove that's as hilarious as it is unpredictable. Imagine a Christmas party soundtracked by a mischievous AI DJ with a penchant for the surreal, and you're halfway there.

But just when you think you've got Longyin pegged, he throws a curveball. ‘A Common Circle’ transports you to a completely different soundscape, all ambient textures and cinematic grandeur. This is Longyin showcasing his versatility, effortlessly hopping between genres and defying categorisation.

As with his debut album, he's not afraid to experiment. ‘Courteous Agitator’ throws a wilfully erratic jungle beat into the mix, while ‘The End of Freedom’ builds tension with ominous synths and dark, brooding undertones. Elsewhere, ‘Clueless’ is a sonic clash of semi-industrial grit and spacious sci-fi soundscapes.

Just when you think things are getting a bit too serious, Longyin injects another dose of his trademark humour. The brilliantly titled ‘The Great Paper Cathedral Demise’ is a slow-burning chillout number that's both beautiful and slightly unhinged. Then there's ‘Old Skool Trifle Dance’, a high-octane club banger that'll have you reaching for the glow sticks. The album closes with ‘Delectation’, a track that perfectly encapsulates Longyin's ability to collide seemingly disparate worlds. Hazy everyday sounds and clattering utensils are interwoven with delicate notes from ‘Silent Night’, creating a strangely captivating sonic tapestry.

‘Part Deux’ is a wild ride from start to finish. It's funny, it's frenetic, it's utterly bonkers, and it's a testament to Longyin's unique artistic vision. If you're looking for something a bit different this Christmas, look no further.
