An artist who artfully blurs the lines between modern and vintage sounds, Johnny Moezzi is back in the spotlight with the release of his synth-laden third album, ‘Funky Papu’.
After first making his mark in 2013 with the release of his debut record ‘The Orange Album’, Johnny has become a true creative force, channelling bright synths into his sonic pop sound. For his new release, Johnny has taken things a step further, paying homage to the joyous sounds of his youth, while also reaching out into more contemporary spaces through his honest vocals and undeniable integrity.
Available now on all major streaming platforms, ‘Funky Papu’ is a brilliant exploration of alternative soul and modern pop, with Johnny delivering seven original songs filled with melodic choruses, musical builds, and heartfelt lyrics. Speaking about the new record, Johnny explained, “The ‘Funky Papu’ EP is the first time I’ve been able to express, on record, some of the more “pop” sounds I loved as a kid, before becoming a musician and knowing how the sauce is made.”
He continued, “It’s about integrity more than form. If something is displaying a vulnerability or honesty, I don’t care so much what dialect or language it’s being communicated through.”
Born in Tehran, Iran to a Persian Father and an Italian Mother, Johnny’s family fled to Salinas, CA when he was just four years old. As he grew up, his lifelong love affair with music was sparked by sneaking into a BB King performance, alongside some heartfelt mentoring by a member of Richie Valens’ family from the Backyard Blues Band. The now Los Angeles-based artist continues to be inspired by a diverse mix of musical cultures and styles.
