Vanderlay Battles Self-Sabotage On Beautiful New Single ‘Triumph and Disaster’

  • 2 min read

Melbourne-based folk project Vanderlay delivers a poignant, deeply introspective new track. With its flowing melodies, evocative lyrics, and atmospheric strings, this new single evokes a profound sense of both hope and introspection. Its unique structure expertly blends familiar elements with an otherworldly twist, painting a soundscape of building tension and the inevitability of a breakdown.

The song follows the February release of 'Assimilate Strangely', hinting at a larger exploration of these themes in a forthcoming EP expected later this year.

"The song is the internal battle, the dialogue with oneself when trying to process or alter circumstance," explains Caspar Conrick, the creative force behind Vanderlay. "It comes to head, a point where everything must be laid out before you and examined without bias. The findings and the process are found to be one and the same: triumph and disaster."

Vanderlay began as a space for Conrick, a singer-songwriter with deep roots in artists like Dylan, Morrison, and Mitchell, to create music shaped by his own inspirations. He finds himself drawn to songs overflowing with truth and explorations of the human experience, prompting introspection in the listener. This classic foundation blends with the influence of contemporary acts like Aimee Mann and Fleet Foxes.

Outside the musical realm, Conrick's keen eye as a photographer also inspires his songwriting. "I believe success in both songwriting and photography hinges on being an active and curious participant in the world," he notes.

This multi-faceted approach results in a rare, intuitive songwriting style. Vanderlay's music marries complex, profound storytelling with expansive soundscapes, creating a listening experience that is both challenging and deeply accessible.

The track was recorded at The Aviary Studios in Melbourne, Australia, with Fraser Montgomery handling recording and mixing duties, and Adam Dempsey mastering the result.

Vanderlay's growing fanbase is testament to the project's appeal. Past accomplishments include festival appearances at Nightjar Festival and Grampians Grape Escape, as well as a sold-out headlining show at Northcote Social Club. Their music enjoys consistent support from stations like PBS, FBi, RRR, and Triple J, with over 55,000 streams accumulated on Spotify.
