Minneapolis Musician John Deering Returns with Raw Rock Cut, 'Strip Mall Jesus'

John Deering, a Minneapolis-based artist, has delivered his powerful new single, 'Strip Mall Jesus', which arrived online today. This release marks a significant moment for Deering, a return to songwriting after a lengthy hiatus, driven by a deep-seated creative urge.

The track, steeped in the raw energy of '90s rock icons like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, is a testament to Deering's ability to channel personal narratives into compelling music. His journey to this point has been enriched by collaborations with notable figures in the Minneapolis music scene. Ryan Smith of Soul Asylum, a mentor to Deering, played a vital role in refining the song's early versions and shaping its arrangement. Deering expresses immense gratitude for Smith's knowledge and musicianship, highlighting his generosity. Drummer Peter Anderson, known for his work with Run Westy Run, provides the driving force behind "Strip Mall Jesus," propelling the song into an energetic overdrive.

The genesis of 'Strip Mall Jesus' is rooted in a deeply impactful story shared by a friend during a jam session. A chilling account of a childhood tragedy, involving a fatal shooting, left Deering and his fellow musicians stunned. The phrase 'Strip Mall Jesus', uttered by his friend, became a haunting refrain, sparking Deering's creative process. The song, written from the perspective of the friend, serves as an outlet for long-held anger and creative expression.

Deering's recording process reflects a strong DIY ethos. His basement studio, equipped with a "gamers" computer, Pro Tools, and a trusty Neumann microphone, became his creative sanctuary. Notably, the vocal recording process was uniquely resourceful. Frustrated with initial takes, Deering transformed a small bathroom into a makeshift vocal booth, affectionately dubbed the "Shudio" by his daughters. This space, draped with blankets and towels, allowed him to achieve the desired sound quality, showcasing his commitment to his craft.

'Strip Mall Jesus' stands out as a release of years of pent-up creative energy. For Deering, who set aside songwriting to pursue a career and family life, the song represents a resurgence of a long-dormant passion. "Thirty years ago I sat down to write my first song. Then, real life struck," he reflects, emphasising that the desire to create never truly faded. "It is never too late to do something new," he asserts, highlighting that his journey is a testament to pursuing passion at any stage of life. The single is a powerful reminder that authentic, heartfelt storytelling continues to resonate deeply within the contemporary music landscape.
