Newcastle's Goon Gremlins have been steadily building a buzz throughout 2024, dropping a string of captivating singles like 'Baby Can't Bite', 'Jesus Was A Goon Sack', and 'Nostalgia'. Now, the band has reached a significant milestone with the release of their highly anticipated debut EP, 'Tell Your Friends You Love Them'.
This six-track offering is a vibrant and rich tapestry of indie music, perfectly encapsulating the essence of Goon Gremlins. While intensely personal, the EP also aims to resonate with both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
At the heart of the EP lies 'Shifting Space', a poignant dedication to vocalist Angelina Burke's brother Xavier, who tragically passed away as a teenager. The song delicately explores themes of loss, grief, and the ephemeral nature of life, serving as both a tribute and a testament to healing.
"It's a reminder to tell the people you care about that they are appreciated," Burke explains. "Life is fleeting, and losing someone can leave you wishing you'd said it more. I wrote the song to let him know that I was broken for a very long time, but now, seven years later, I'm doing okay. It's shifted into an appreciation that I got to grow up with someone like him."
Burke also credits her friends for helping her cope with the loss and navigate through difficult times. "My friends, many of whom knew my brother well, were entirely the reason I was able to push through every dark place." This sense of camaraderie and support is woven throughout the EP, which also celebrates themes of perseverance and finding joy in life, especially when surrounded by loved ones.
The band's strong connection shines through in tracks like 'Wasted' and 'Jesus Was A Goon Sack', demonstrating their growth as a unit navigating creativity and personal journeys together.
Recorded at Hazy Cosmic Jive with producer Gareth Hudson, 'Tell Your Friends You Love Them' was brought to life in an environment that encouraged experimentation and fun. "Gareth is an amazing producer who brings such a comfortable energy to the studio," says Burke. "It allowed us to experiment with different sounds, like using an Ebow on the electric guitar to create dreamy riffs in 'Nostalgia' and 'Shifting Space.'"
The band embraced spontaneity, even writing new harmonies and lead lines during the recording process. "These were the last things that tied the songs together and made them feel complete," Burke reflects.
With this heartfelt and meticulously crafted debut EP, Goon Gremlins invite listeners to join them on a journey of reflection, healing, and the enduring power of love and friendship.
