LCD Soundsystem are back with a brand new track, 'X-Ray Eyes', and it has us all wondering if a new album might be on the horizon. The single, which premiered on NTS Radio earlier this week with a frustratingly interrupted play by DJ Anu, is finally available in its full glory on the band's website.
Clocking in at just over four minutes, 'X-Ray Eyes' throws back to the band's early days, with a raw, almost pre-debut album energy. A synth hook dances over a minimal disco beat, creating a hypnotic groove that's impossible not to move to. Add to that some unexpected woodwind flourishes and a healthy dose of what can only be described as Fall-esque repetition, and you've got a classic LCD Soundsystem sound.
Lyrically, the song is simple but effective. "I have eyes that can see inside" repeats throughout, punctuated by whispered pronouncements of the song's title. But then comes the middle eight, a spoken-word breakdown that throws you for a loop: "busboy, cigarette girl, dental hygienist, or backpacking teen / newspaper seller, the nightclub MC / you’re everything, you’re all I can see / the bones in your body, the blood in your veins / your hasty decisions, your behavioral chains / replace all the cells, still something remains / but I’m losing you…sorry, what are you saying?" It's a quirky, unexpected lyrical turn that adds depth and intrigue to the track.
In the meantime, we can look forward to LCD Soundsystem's annual holiday residency at Knockdown Center in NYC. The band will be playing 12 shows across three weekends in November and December, with support from Poolside, Gustaf, and Fcukers. And if that wasn't enough, they're also kicking off an eight-show residency in Los Angeles on Halloween. So, plenty of chances to catch them live and maybe, just maybe, hear some more new material.
