Maver Embraces Vulnerability and Finds Solace in Shared Sadness on New EP 'Spirals'

Australian artist Maver has been steadily building anticipation for his sophomore EP, 'Spirals', with the release of two exceptional singles, 'Lazy' with jnr. and 'I'm healing' with LORA. Now, the wait is over as 'Spirals' arrives in its entirety, complete with two previously unheard tracks, 'Damn Sad' and 'Short Term Memory', which seamlessly weave into the EP's overarching narrative.

'Spirals' is more than just a collection of songs; it's a poignant exploration of mental health, chronicling Maver's personal journey through anxiety and depression. As he explains, “'Spirals' is an EP that’s been a long time in the making. I started writing it in my bedroom in Perth back in 2022, during a period where I was really making progress with my mental health." This introspection translates into a relatable and comforting soundscape for listeners.

The EP's title is a metaphor for the often cyclical nature of mental health struggles. "The title 'Spirals' reflects how mental health can often feel like a downward spiral - like you’re stuck in your own head, going deeper and deeper," Maver shares. However, he emphasises the importance of connection and shared experience, adding, "But it’s also a reminder that you don’t have to go through it alone. The main message of the EP is: It’s okay to be sad. Let’s be sad together, and maybe we’ll be happier."

Maver's creative process for 'Spirals' was organic and intuitive. He describes those familiar late-night bursts of inspiration, saying, "I wrote most of the tracks in my bedroom in those late-night bursts of inspiration, starting well before midnight, ending up sometimes jamming with myself at 3am." Collaborations with close friends like LORA, Ukiyo, and jnr. added another layer of depth to the project, with Maver noting that "most of the demos we worked on stayed true to their original versions."

Ultimately, 'Spirals' is a testament to the power of vulnerability and the solace found in shared human experiences. Maver's desire to make others feel seen and understood shines through in his music. "If I can make someone’s day slightly better or make them feel more comfortable, happier, or even just a bit more seen, then I’ll be happy," he says. "That’s my mission statement and what drives everything I do."
