Melbourne's indie synth/pop duo, Strange Talk, has returned with 'Vanilla Sigh', the pulsating first single from their upcoming EP, 'Luna'. This release marks their first new music since 2021's 'Speech Therapy' and signals an exciting evolution in their sound.
From its opening bars, 'Vanilla Sigh' draws listeners into a moody, atmospheric soundscape. Deep, relentless basslines intertwine with layers of evocative synths, creating an irresistible backdrop for the band's infectious vocal melodies. The track conjures images of neon-lit nights and sun-soaked beaches, embodying a vibe that wouldn't feel out of place on the 'Miami Vice' soundtrack.
The band explained their thematic approach, stating, "'Vanilla Sigh' is a song where we made up a movie plot - Lyrically it’s sort of a third person narrative; we’ve always loved songs with that approach.”
Mixed by the band's own Gerard Sidhu and mastered by the acclaimed Mike Marsh, the track's production is a masterclass in dynamics. The tension builds throughout, slowly unravelling with intricate rhythms and melodies, culminating in a euphoric final refrain. Lyrically, the track serves as an anthem for those navigating the complexities of a fading relationship.
Strange Talk described their sonic intentions, “On ‘Vanilla Sigh’ we worked on blending melancholic undertones with a psychedelic, 80s-inspired synth-pop vibe. The track has this bittersweet yet infectious feel to it, and is a soundtrack for anyone finding solace in faded love.”
Since forming in 2010, Strange Talk has carved out an impressive career, sharing stages with the likes of Foster The People, The Presets, and Marina and the Diamonds. Their music has been featured in numerous TV shows, ad campaigns, and films, underscoring their widespread appeal.
With 'Vanilla Sigh', Strange Talk continues to showcase their ability to create captivating, emotionally resonant music. The forthcoming EP, "Luna," promises to be a compelling addition to their discography, further cementing their position as one of Australia's most exciting indie-pop acts.
