Poppy Holmes Weaves a Tapestry of Self-Discovery with 'Patchwork'

Manchester-based singer-songwriter Poppy Holmes continues to captivate with her introspective brand of folk-pop, and her newest offering, 'Patchwork,' is no exception. Fresh from the ethereal beauty of 'Kiss From A Star,' Holmes dives even deeper into the complexities of identity formation in this poignant new single.

'Patchwork' is an intimate exploration of how we shape ourselves by absorbing elements from those around us. Holmes' signature delicate vocals and intricate instrumentation create a soundscape that is both comforting and melancholic, mirroring the song's emotional core. Gentle fingerpicking and subtle strings intertwine, evoking a sense of fragility and introspection.

Holmes' lyrics are as evocative as ever, stemming from home truths and experiences. She explained, “‘Patchwork’ is a song I wrote about a feeling I experienced a lot as a teenager. I used to beat myself up about having ‘stolen’ my personality from other women, and there was definitely a sense of lacking self-identity. But now, I see it in a more positive light—it’s made me a better artist and, hopefully, a more empathetic person.”

Despite its melancholic undertones, 'Patchwork' is ultimately a song of acceptance and self-love. Holmes reflects on her past insecurities with a newfound maturity, recognising that the patchwork nature of her identity is what makes her unique. "Now, though, this feeling that inspired the song sits quite comfortably in the tapestry of my life," she says. “I’m made up of so many fantastic women, and I wouldn’t change that for the world.”

This newfound confidence is evident in Holmes' evolving sound. While her folk roots remain strong, 'Patchwork' hints at a broader musical palette, incorporating subtle jazz influences that nod to her early musical explorations.

'Patchwork' is just the latest instalment in a series of upcoming releases that promise to showcase Holmes' continued growth as an artist. Fans can also catch her debut festival performance at Strut (Streatham Festival) in London on October 12th, where she'll no doubt deliver an intimate and moving live experience.

With her raw honesty and undeniable talent, Poppy Holmes is an artist to watch. 'Patchwork' is a testament to her ability to transform personal struggles into universally relatable art, inviting listeners to piece together their own tapestries of self-discovery.

Speaking about what's next in her rising career, Poppy shared, "More, more, more! After being diagnosed with ADHD and getting treatment, I’m finally able to pursue this big dream of mine. My music is my story, and sharing it gives me the biggest thrill of all - can’t stop, won’t stop! Right now, we’re finishing up a jazz ballad that truly reflects my roots and love for the standards. Fun fact: my Year 6 presentation was on jazz scat, and I wore a beret… I was not a popular child!”
