Premiere: Low Monroe Unveils Dark New Single 'Exxon Tears

Get ready for a sonic descent into the depths of human darkness with Low Monroe's latest single, 'Exxon Tears', out November 22nd. This track marks a significant evolution for the project, showcasing a refined sound and a chilling narrative that explores the destructive nature of greed and exploitation.

'Exxon Tears' is a gothic post-punk masterpiece that draws inspiration from iconic figures like Bauhaus and Nick Cave, while maintaining a sleek and contemporary edge. The song's ominous atmosphere is perfectly matched by its intense storytelling, which delves into the consequences of speaking truth to power and the devastating impact of selfish actions. It's a seminal track, and we're stoked to premiere it a day early.

Low Monroe, the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist and producer Mark Sergi, explains the inspiration behind the track: "While writing the song, I was reading a lot about the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. I found it so fascinating. In relation to the song, the Exxon Valdez is a metaphor for how selfishness can vastly pour and do so much harm."

The song's narrative unfolds as a "confrontational cry for help," painting a picture of crime, violence, and corruption in a brooding light. It's a chilling reminder of the price of truth and the far-reaching consequences of unchecked greed.

Low Monroe's music is heavily influenced by the visual style and hardboiled narratives of Old Hollywood crime and noir genres. Sergi explains, "I really began to fall in love with the specific character tropes of these films, all through the lens of the antagonists and their slow, eerie demise. I started writing in a very character-driven manner, similar to what I was watching; and from there the Low Monroe character started taking form."

This character-driven approach, inspired by local artist Cong Josie, is central to the Low Monroe project. "I surprisingly felt more comfortable playing a theatrical character," Sergi admits.

Originally a solo endeavour, Low Monroe has evolved into a collaborative effort with the formation of The Fugitives, a live band that brings an added dimension to the project's performances. Since their first show in September 2023, Low Monroe and The Fugitives have been steadily gaining momentum, playing shows and releasing singles like 'Dead Star Revolver' and 'Smoke Show'.

'Exxon Tears' was recorded, produced, and mixed by Low Monroe himself in an undisclosed location, adding another layer of intrigue to this captivating release. Prepare to be swept away by the dark sonic tide of Low Monroe's 'Exxon Tears' – a haunting and unforgettable musical experience.
