Australian alternative pop artist Chymes continues her streak of vibrant, otherworldly releases with her new single, 'Voodoo Doll'. This track also heralds the arrival of her second EP, 'Alien', set to be released on November 8th via Nettwerk.
Known for her genre-bending music, Chymes once again showcases her fearless approach to experimentation. While her 2023 EP Game Over explored the darker side of her pop artistry, Chymes has shifted gears for her latest project. Embracing a newfound sense of joy and creative freedom, her forthcoming EP, Alien, offers an intergalactic hyper-pop journey into the self.
The EP's title and central theme resonate with Chymes' personal experiences. "My whole life I’ve always felt very odd," she explains. "I couldn’t ever quite put my finger on it... Last year... I was just like, ‘f**k it’. I’m going to embrace it and make some music about it."
Earlier this year, Chymes initiated this chapter with 'UFO', a surprising blend of hyper-pop elements and expertly crafted hooks. This departure from her previous sound was solidified with the playful, quirky energy of 'Sweet', and its subsequent rework, 'UFO (Extraterrestrial Version)', featuring K-Pop artist YOUHA.
Her latest single, 'Voodoo Doll', bridges the gap between Chymes' past and future musical endeavours. Reflecting on the creative process, Chymes admits, "When we wrote the melody, and put together the bare-bones production, it came together so fast. But when it came time to finish the track, we weren’t sure which way to go." Ultimately, they achieved the perfect balance, honouring her dark-pop roots while embracing her evolution.
Lyrically, 'Voodoo Doll' dives into the exhilarating experience of falling head over heels for someone. Chymes shares, "It’s saying, ‘what did you do to me?’…Writing stories like this are so fun for me, because I get to go into a character and create the entire world."
