Naarm/Melbourne's Ash K, the creative force behind Clean Beast, has dropped a potent new single, ‘Tragedy’, a track that plunges headfirst into the depths of personal and global trauma. With a sonic palette that stretches from the gritty edges of post-punk to the hypnotic pulse of Berlin school electronica, Clean Beast crafts a sound that’s both expansive and intensely personal. ‘Tragedy’ stands as a testament to this, a sonic opera of raw emotion and driving intensity.
The track hits hard from the outset, a relentless barrage of driving drums, sharp guitars, and throbbing bass, all anchored by Ash’s distinctive vocal delivery. There's a clear nod to the industrial grit of Nine Inch Nails, blended with the more melodic undertones of Depeche Mode. As Ash states, “Musically it’s as close to punk as I get; no frills, no solos, no fade-outs. It bursts into your consciousness, get the job done, and leaves.” This directness is mirrored in the song's thematic core, a reflection on the helplessness felt in the face of global conflict and the lasting scars of war. “What war doesn’t kill, it breaks forever,” Ash observes, capturing the profound impact of violence.
Ash’s own experiences with complex PTSD, autism, depression, and anxiety lend a raw authenticity to the track. ‘Tragedy’ is more than just a song; it’s a connection, a validation for those who have endured similar pain. “You are seen and heard. It might not be much but it’s what I have to offer,” Ash explains. “Things happen, they don’t make sense, we suffer; I understand.” This sentiment resonates deeply, offering a sense of solidarity in the face of overwhelming adversity.
Despite growing up in a creative family, Ash faced resistance to pursuing a musical path. However, after a challenging period, a music therapist suggested using songwriting as a form of expression. Initially, Ash felt creatively empty, stating, “I told him in session: “There’s nothing there...” And there wasn’t.” Yet, upon returning home and reflecting, the creative floodgates opened. Clean Beast emerged as a vital outlet, allowing Ash to channel their experiences into powerful music.
‘Tragedy’ was entirely self-produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered in Ash’s home studio. The single is released via Wild At Heart, a label dedicated to supporting artists who face injustice and exclusion due to visible and invisible disabilities. Wild At Heart champions original music that challenges artistic norms and pushes for greater access and equity within the music industry and beyond. Ash’s deeply personal and powerfully resonant ‘Tragedy’ is a perfect example of this mission.
