British indie-rock legends The Kooks are back with their first new album in three years, titled 'Never/Know', out on 9th May via Virgin Music Group. The album is a return to the band's signature anthemic songwriting, showcasing their knack for crafting timeless indie-rock hits.
The first single, 'Never Know', is an effortlessly infectious and groove-driven track that perfectly encapsulates the excitement of a newly discovered romance. Frontman Luke Pritchard describes it as "a love song about a cute meet with someone unpredictable," and it's sure to become a fan favourite.
'Never/Know' is a self-produced effort that sees Pritchard and the band reconnecting with their original creative drive. "It’s not about going back to the first album’s sound, but to the roots of our influences and asking, ‘What is the identity of this band?’" says Pritchard.
The result is an album that captures the magic of their iconic debut while exploring fresh territory. From the lush female backing vocals on 'Sunny Baby' to the Motown-inspired beat of the title track, 'Never/Know' is full of surprises.
The album also features some of Pritchard's most personal lyrics to date, filled with witty one-liners and endearing nicknames for his loved ones. A cover of Paul McCartney and Wings' 'Arrow Through Me' reveals one of the band's key influences, while the closing track, 'Talk About It', showcases their appreciation for classic soul.
The Kooks have managed to stay relevant in an ever-changing musical landscape, with a core audience that now includes a whole new generation of fans. With over 7 million monthly listeners on Spotify, it's clear that their music continues to resonate.
'Never/Know' is a testament to The Kooks' enduring talent and their ability to craft timeless indie-rock anthems. Fans can catch them live on their upcoming Australian tour, kicking off in February, where they'll be headlining festivals like Party In The Paddock and Yours & Owls.
