Relentless Pursuit, the solo project of Matthew Konradt, has been steadily building a reputation for prolific output. With ‘Ascension’, his fifth full-length album, Konradt continues his exploration of metalcore, delivering a 13-track concept album inspired by the Book of Revelation.
From the outset, ‘Ascension’ establishes its sonic landscape with ‘Alpha"’ a broad instrumental piece that sets the stage for the ensuing musical drama. The album quickly explodes into life with ‘Sanctified’, a track that captures the essence of ‘Ascension’ with its metalcore anthemics and the heavy opening line, "I feel lost in this oblivion of despair."
Konradt's musical prowess is undeniable. He handles all aspects of the music, from the unrelenting drum programming, the tight-knit synths, and searing, intricate guitar licks to the almost tectonic growl of his vocals. It’s a sonic domination that rallies in tracks like ‘Fallen’, the album's third single, and the blossoming ‘Not Afraid Anymore’. Here, Konradt addresses themes of fate, condemnation, and redemption, creating a powerful and impactful listening experience.
‘War With The World’, the album's second single, marks the first time Konradt has utilised a guest vocalist. Eric Castiglia joins the track, providing clean vocals in the chorus and bridge. While the attempt at vocal harmonies is commendable, the execution falls slightly short, as neither vocalist possesses a particularly strong singing voice. However, the song shines in its heaviness, with guitar riffs reminiscent of metalcore giants like For Today and screams that lean into deathcore territory.
One of the true highlights arrives in ‘The Smell Of Destruction’, a searing assault of sonic brutality, with riffs that hit like a battering ram and vocals that could curdle blood. The sheer intensity of the track is undeniable, and it perfectly encapsulates the raw energy and power of Matthew's vision.
‘Ascension’ is not without its quieter moments. ‘Here with Me’ is a haunting track that delves into the depths of the human soul, exploring themes of vulnerability and the eternal quest for connection. The song offers a glimpse into a soul trapped in a tempestuous sea, struggling against the relentless waves of adversity. ‘When Calamity Ceases To Exist’ provides a touching intermission with its melodic acoustic sounds, offering a brief respite from the album's heavier moments.
The album concludes with ‘Omega’, another broad instrumental piece that brings the musical journey to a close. With each track, a new assault begins, crashing like waves from ‘Fallen’ to ‘Ascension’ and ‘Divine Intervention’. Konradt has once again taken a swing at assembling his ideal album, and while ‘Ascension’ may not be perfect, it's a testament to his growth as an artist and his dedication to the metalcore genre.
