Kenzie From Welly - 'No Hype'

A product of life challenges, self-belief, and ‘90s hip hop, Kenzie From Welly returns with her new single and video, ‘No Hype’ feat. POETIK. A stunning track that is is as hard hitting as it is smooth, the new single perfectly showcases Kenzie’s effortless flow. With production from long time friend Troy Samuela and featuring her cousin, POETIK, ‘No Hype’ is a celebration of Kenzie’s community, activism and her cultural roots.

Speaking candidly about the single, Kenzie shared, “Long time friend and producer Troy Samuela set the backdrop for ‘No Hype’ with a velvety, ice cold low end. Following Troy's lead and chanelling my favorite whiskey on the rocks, I layered a gentle melodic flow to sit on the drums like frosting but felt we still needed to elevate the flavour profile."

"Hitting up my cousin POETIK was a no-brainer. Working in construction at the time, he wrote his verse on a loose piece of cardboard on his lunch break and had the vocals stems back the same day. POETIK commands a fiery flow on ‘No Hype’ uniting the fusion between fire and ice.”

Kenzie From Welly is the product of life challenges, self-belief, and ‘90s hip hop. Like her name proudly states, Kenzie was born in Wellington, Aotearoa, to Māori and Samoan parents, who, along with artists like Bones Thugs-N-Harmony and Lauryn Hill, shaped her to become the strong woman she is today.

As inspired as Kenzie is by world affairs, global music and travel, there is no place like home. Like the old saying goes: You can take Kenzie out of Welly, but you can’t take Welly out of Kenzie; it’s not only in her name, it’s also in her heart, soul, and mind state.

From openly freestyling in the garage to developing her style in the privacy of her bedroom, Kenzie’s love for the hip hop artform blossomed. As her confidence grew, she began experimenting and started to collaborate with her family which include her brother Cole and well-respected MC out of Apia, Samoa, her cousin, POETIK. Once she found her feet with writing and rapping, Kenzie delved into production, engineering and ghost-writing; further cementing her as a well-rounded artist.
