An energetic band with a bold neo-soul sound, Kings & Associates have become one of Australia’s most exciting new acts. From their humble beginnings to winning three Australia’s BMA’s on the back of their acclaimed sophomore album, the band have championed a powerful and poignant style that is built on dual vocals, soulful instrumentals, and undeniable heart.
After first appearing on our radar with the release of their new single ‘Neighbour’, we’ve been listening to the band non-stop, diving into their genre-defying and utterly electrifying sound. For our latest stellar discovery from the band, we’ve focused on the brilliant ‘Red Dress’, a single that appeared early in the band’s career, but has now been revitalised and re-released for all to enjoy.
Originally a Latin-blues track appearing on their debut album, ‘Red Dress’ has been redesigned as a smooth neo-soul and blues hybrid, carving away a new path filled with heavy funk tones and some stellar dual vocals from singers Anjii and Steve Portolesi. Speaking about the single, the band explained their inspiration via Bandcamp saying, “The lyrics describe the horrors of child sex trafficking and was the song was written to promote awareness of this reality in hopes of encouraging people to speak up and resist sexual exploitation on every level, in every industry.”
The reimagined version of the single is available now alongside a brilliant new video and will feature on their highly anticipated new record, ‘Neighbour’. The single also marks the band’s first release through Color Red Records and was tracked by seven-time Grammy winner Jim Scott in his Los Angeles studio and mixed by Nashville-based four-time Grammy winner Vance Powell.
Riding a wave of momentum, the band have become regulars at Australian festivals including Mordi, Blenheim, Echuca Semaphore, and Bendigo, and after triumphant performances at premier venues such as the Cherrybar, Lazybones, and the National Press Club, all eyes are firmly on the band for their upcoming album.
