Penelope Robin – ‘Animal’

An incredibly talented pop newcomer who is taking the world by storm, Penelope Robin has shared her defiant debut single, ‘Animal’.

Released independently via The Orchard, Penelope’s first official single delivers a gritty, bass-heavy blend of pop-rock that artfully draws on her Latin roots. Exploring the fierce and often dangerous journey of escaping toxicity, be it a person, situation, or relationship, ‘Animal’ is raw, expressive, and brilliantly curated. Writing from her own experiences and interactions with people, Penelope has a talent for turning their emotional impact into powerful pop anthems, and ‘Animal’ might just be one of the most effective singles of the year so far.

Speaking openly about the single, Penelope said, “The sound on this track is different than anything I’ve ever done before — I wanted to mesh together all my favourite genres and it just worked! I feel like this new sound captures my true personality and the lyrics open up a window in a very honest way into my life and the many things that I go through. What I really hope is people can relate and feel like they have a friend in me when they listen (or hopefully, dance!).”

‘Animal’ opens with exotic Latin tones rolling into a gorgeous, modern pop melody, setting the scene for the throbbing bassline and finessed percussion which help create an alluring rhythm throughout. Penelope’s stunning vocals push the song along, filling the lyrics with a sense of wicked, haunting sensuality, that matches the tone of the piece perfectly.

Born into an artistic family, Penelope’s Venezuelan mother, a producer and director, has worked with Little Mix, Nile Rodgers, Kathy Sledge, and Martha Wash, while her father, Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum producer and songwriter C-Rod, is renowned for his work with Enrique Iglesias, Lady Gaga, Paulina Rubio, and Jennifer Lopez.

Getting a taste for life as a musician with opportunities like a slot opening for Karol G in front of a 14,000-strong audience and touring around the US through schools, shopping malls, and music festivals, Penelope made the decision to take a step back from the stage, in search of her own unique sound which felt true to her. Over the years, Penelope eventually moved to Bogotá, Colombia, and dedicated herself to developing and finding a sound that succinctly combines her varied musical influences, Latin heritage, and vibrant personality.

‘Animal’ emerges as the first new material from these sessions, firmly putting Penelope in a position to rise as a credible, unique pop force. At its heart, ‘Animal’ is a striking moment that proves Penelope Robin is only just getting started, so stay tuned for plenty more to come in 2023 and beyond.
