Vancouver punks Chronic Fatigue are back with a vengeance, dropping their self-produced second EP, 'Surrender to Serenity'. Known for their explosive live shows and raw punk energy, the band takes a daring leap forward, injecting their sound with elements of post-punk, metal, and experimental hip-hop for a truly unique listening experience.
This EP marks a departure from their straight-ahead punk rock roots. The band embraced a more collaborative songwriting process, drawing inspiration from vocalist Sam Patterson's love of experimental hip-hop artists like JPEGMAFIA, Danny Brown, and Death Grips. The result? An energetic and vibrant sound that pushes boundaries while staying true to their punk core.
For Chronic Fatigue – Patterson, guitarist Sean Wilson, bassist Dylan Bondy, and drummer Quinn Letendre – the live experience is paramount. They've quickly earned a reputation as one of Vancouver's most exciting new live acts, captivating audiences with their high-octane performances and infectious energy. With Surrender to Serenity, they aimed to capture the intensity and sheer fun of their live shows while pushing their songwriting to new heights. The result is four blistering tracks packed with hard-hitting punk grooves, intricate vocals, and a sharp blend of hip-hop and punk that demands to be witnessed live.
Beyond music, the band found inspiration in skate culture. "None of us are big-time skaters," explains drummer Quinn Letendre, "but our videographer and photographer Liam Tait grew up in that space. He showed me a ton of old skate videos, and I fell in love with the music and the vibes. There's a distinct parallel between punk rock and skating. Both are tight-knit communities of often rejected outcasts, who are usually misunderstood. All we want to do is hang out, have fun, and make some noise!"
This influence shines through in their latest music video for 'Serenity', a love letter to old-school skate videos like 'Baker 3' and 'Yeah Right!' Featuring local skaters like Dashell Willborn and Sean Pearson, the video captures the raw energy and camaraderie of skate culture. "I had a blast making this," says Letendre. "It was great to really jump into that subculture, hanging around the skate park. I think the video reflects how much fun we had."
Chronic Fatigue's 'Surrender to Serenity' is a testament to their growth and evolution as a band. It's a bold and exhilarating ride that's sure to solidify their place as a force to be reckoned with in the Vancouver punk scene and beyond.
