Denim Dan Weaves Mythology and Modernity on New Album 'Circe'

Denim Dan are back with their ninth studio album, and it's a bit of a mythological odyssey. Following hot on the heels of their anniversary compilation earlier this year, 'Denim Dan's Circe' sees the band diving into the world of Homer's Odyssey, exploring themes of longing, resilience, and transformation with their signature folk-rock sound.

Don't worry though, you don't need a classics degree to appreciate this record. While inspired by the sorceress Circe, the album cleverly weaves these ancient myths into contemporary stories that resonate with everyday emotions. 'Circe's Song (Save Me)', for example, with its haunting refrain – "Reunite me with my kin…save me, I’ve been gone too long" – captures a universal yearning for connection and belonging.

The album kicks off with 'Sometimes (The River Will Overflow)', an anthemic blend of indie-folk and dark country that sets the introspective tone. 'We'll Go On' then picks up the pace with driving guitars and a soaring chorus, offering a powerful reflection on life after loss. Elsewhere, 'A Minute to Midnight' adds a touch of keys, while 'Take My Soul' strips things back with a soulful acoustic ballad. There's even a bit of 80s energy on 'Doorway's', showcasing the band's versatility.

Of course, it wouldn't be a Denim Dan album without some top-notch musicianship. Michael Halitzer's emotive vocals are as strong as ever, while the band – Lorenzo Crescibene, Dave Gellis, Gordon Kent, Mike Nirack, Joe Nuecome, and Ron Petrecelli – deliver a performance that's both intricate and heartfelt. The flute, in particular, adds a mystical touch to tracks like 'Excuse Me For Crying'.

From the tender folk-pop of 'Sweet Saroya' to the uplifting 'Embrace The Day' and the reflective closer 'Running Down The Time Line', 'Denim Dan's Circe' is a journey worth taking. It's an album that reaffirms Denim Dan's place in the folk-rock scene, while also pushing their sound in new and exciting directions.
