Canadian artist Donovan Woods has unveiled a brand new track, 'Back For The Funeral', ahead of his debut Australian tour in June. The single is a moving glimpse into the musicality and lyrical prowess that define Woods' work, taken from his recently-announced seventh studio album, 'Things Were Never Good If They're Not Good Now'.
An intensely emotional song, 'Back For The Funeral' was co-written with Grammy-nominated songwriter Lori McKenna and Platinum-selling songwriter Matt Nathanson. It explores the heavy experience of returning to a small town for a funeral, a reunion tinged with grief and reflection.
"There's so much writing done about being back in your hometown and what it does to you," Woods explains. "But there's the idea that you only go there with bad news - which can be true - and what it does to your feelings about your hometown."
Woods' popularity has steadily risen over the past decade, fuelled by his heartfelt storytelling and captivating live performances. His 2020 album, 'Without People', tours with artists such as The Gaslight Anthem, and US TV syncs have cemented his reputation as a rising star.
'Things Were Never Good If They're Not Good Now' showcases Woods' storytelling mastery at its peak. The album's 12 intimate songs reflect on his personal journey since his 2020 breakthrough, delving into life's complexities with raw honesty. He describes the album as "a funeral to the life I was living."
The release of 'Back For The Funeral' offers Australian fans another opportunity to connect with Woods' music before his arrival. Sydney singer-songwriter Hayley Warner has joined the tour and will perform alongside Woods at each show.
The tour will visit venues nationwide and demonstrates Woods' commitment to supporting the music industry. $1 from each ticket sold will be donated to Support Act, a charity providing crisis relief and mental health support to music industry professionals.
