Emerging Chilean/Italian artist Gemma Ylana is back with a captivating new single, 'Break Ur Own Heart', a smooth blend of RnB and Reggaeton that explores the perils of romanticising a crush. The track delves into that all-too-familiar territory of building up an idealised fantasy around a potential love affair, only to find yourself nursing a self-inflicted heartbreak.
Ylana doesn't shy away from owning the delusion, stating, “This song is for the ones who take their fate into their own hands (delusion), who know what they want (confident delusion) and will go after it even if it’s just a fantasy (DELUSION!).”
'Break Ur Own Heart' showcases Ylana's velvety vocals gliding effortlessly over a lush soundscape crafted in collaboration with long-time friend and producer Chelsea Warner (BOY SODA, Emalia, Ūla) and writer/musician Harley Coleman. The result is a self-assured and mature track that highlights the synergy between Ylana and Warner. Recorded at Offbeat Collective studios in Marrickville, with a team of talented engineers including Sid Swindail, Cam Parkin, and Matt Fioravanti, the production quality shines through.
This latest offering follows Ylana's debut single, 'Stub(born)', and provides a glimpse into the vulnerability and depth she's set to explore in her upcoming EP, 'PRIMAVERA.' Meaning "spring" in both Italian and Spanish, the EP is a collection of songs written between the ages of fourteen and twenty-two, capturing the essence of Ylana's coming-of-age journey.
Ylana, who hails from Western Sydney, draws inspiration from artists like Kali Uchis, Ariana Grande, and Snoh Aalegra, weaving introspective and honest lyrics that resonate with the complexities of young adulthood. She's already garnered significant attention, with her previous single 'Same Shit!' earning praise from FBi Radio, who named her 'Independent Artist Of The Week' and nominated the track for Best Video at the FBi SMAC Awards. Even triple J Drive presenter Tyrone Pynor jumped on the bandwagon, proclaiming his obsession with the track.
With continued support from Create NSW and a growing list of accolades, including her selection for the 2024 Western Sydney Generations Fellowship alongside FRIDAY* and Yellowline, Ylana is proving to be a force to be reckoned with.
'Break Ur Own Heart' is another strong release from this promising artist, and anticipation is building for the arrival of 'PRIMAVERA' on October 30th. Mark your calendars for the EP launch party at Baba's Place, featuring DJ sets by Maz & Vanessa from FBi Radio’s ‘Mi Gente’ and a full band performance.
