Joe Mungovan - ‘A Flower In The Weeds’

Joe Mungovan has brought together a fresh and luminescent sound with wistful songwriting, to float his debut album ‘A Flower In The Weeds’ through speakers across the world. It follows on from singles ‘You + Me’, ‘Lemon + Lime’, ‘Soaking Up The Sunshine’, ‘Give Me Your Love’ and finally ‘Like That’, which all feature on his highly anticipated, inaugural album.

From Germany to Australia, the story of ‘A Flower In The Weeds’ is one that reads like an indie-romance novel, but is the true-to-its-word story of Joe’s whirlwind long distance connection with “the one that got away” during his 2019 European tour.

Joe explained, “I met a girl while on tour in Europe back in 2019.  She cut my hair at 4am after my show in Berlin, and ended up traveling around Europe with me for the remaining shows. I flew back to Australia after the tour ended a few months later and moved into a house in Kangaroo Valley to start writing an album.  I didn’t know if I would ever see her again."

Fate would see them reconnect, an Australian summer bringing her across shores to a spirited and breezy road trip, hopping from town to town along the idyllic East Coast. Soaking up rays of sun and sipping vino by campfires.

Joe continued, “Unfortunately our time together was cut short when we found out that the pandemic was getting quite serious - the German borders were closing. We turned the van around and headed back to Sydney to get her on a flight home I returned to the valley and finished writing. This album is about the time we spent together traveling through Europe and Australia, drinking wine and enjoying life before our plans were turned upside down."

Produced by Joe Mungovan at a picturesque studio in Kangaroo Valley, ‘A Flower In The Weeds’ stays true to Joe’s indie rock roots but is still laden with infectious pop vibes and melodies. The debut album was mixed by ARIA Award winning producer/engineer Tim Carr (Matt Corby, Julia Stone) and mastered by long term collaborator Joe Carra (Courtney Barnett, The Teskey Brothers).

Throughout his career, Joe Mungovan has consistently constructed melodies that expand from traditional pop and rock songwriting structures. His songs have been played across Triple j, Double j and community radio, video support across Rage and MTV and press praise in Rolling Stone, Pilerats, Music Feeds, Au Review, The Music to name a few. Mungovan’s songwriting has also seen him nominated for an APRA Award and Golden Guitar Award in 2021, and a Finalist in the International Songwriting Competition in 2020.
