One of Australia’s rising rap sensations, Lee Emcee first took to music in his school years, learning to read and write music while studying various musical instruments. It was the first step in what would become an enduring passion for Lee, and over the years he’s grown to become a seminal hip-hop talent that perfectly embodies the enduring Australian scene.
Heavily influenced by 90’s hip-hop, Lee’s sound in a bold mix of heavy beats and self-conscious lyrics, capturing a slice of Australian life that we can all relate to. An artist in tune with the world around him, Lee defines his own unique style as ‘positive hip-hop’, offering sharp rhymes that flow with intricate meanings, hidden messages and plenty of depth. After proving his talents in early 2010 with the release of his debut mixtape, Lee has continued to impress fans and critics alike, taking on the independent scene with a style and sound unique to him. Most recently, Lee has released his stellar debut EP, the aptly ‘Society Trap’, an original piece with beats sourced from Australian producers DJ Immaculate and Cosmo & Vampts.
Built from nine songs that perfectly illustrate his flow and dexterity, ‘Society Trap’ hits with a fresh, uncompromising sound, one that is instantly recognisable and impossible to deny. Filled with songs that take on corporations, elitists and governments who are using their power to manipulate and brainwash populations, the EP is a bold change of pace that is wonderfully refreshing.
Speaking about the new release to Music Is My Muse, Lee explained, “I’ve always been interested in so-called conspiracy theories, and in 2012 I had my own awakening and could see exactly what was going on in this world and spent hours, days, weeks, months researching – the things you find when you know what you are looking for is mind-blowing.”
“I’ve always had a battle trying to get friends and family to open their eyes to the truth around them, so I wanted ‘Society Trap’ to be a vehicle for helping people see beyond what’s in front of them. It’s a call to arms to question all things and to not believe something to be true just because you see it in the media.”
