Mae Muller's 'Breakaway' Is A Fresh Start on the Dancefloor

Mae Muller has returned, and she's not holding back. After a significant pause, the North London artist has launched her independent era with 'Breakaway', a vibrant dance-pop track that signals a bold new direction. Produced alongside Herik Michelsen, this single marks a departure and a rebirth for the singer.

Following a 15-month break, Muller steps back into the spotlight with a renewed sense of self. 'Breakaway' is a study in vulnerability and strength, navigating the complexities of love and loss with the relatable honesty that fans have come to expect. This track is a personal revelation, a sonic diary entry that encapsulates the artist's journey towards independence. "I wrote 'Breakaway' in a time when I felt quite lost as an artist," Muller explains. "I was putting so much pressure on myself with my newfound independence, that after a while I just decided to get in the studio and pour everything out and whatever I ended up with, at least it would be a weight off my chest. That was the 13th June last year and has ended up being one of my favourite songs that I've ever written and the start to this new era. It’s about navigating vulnerability, but also finding my power within it, whilst not losing the joy along the way.”

The accompanying music video, directed by Ben Cole, mirrors this emotional intensity. With its haunting visuals and dynamic energy, it perfectly complements the song's themes of liberation and transformation. The track itself is an evolution, blending electronic undertones with catchy pop sensibilities. Muller experiments with genre boundaries, drawing inspiration from '00s dance and club culture. Vocoded vocals drift over driving beats and pulsating basslines, all anchored by her candid lyrics. It captures that introspective shift that occurs as a night out winds down, those unspoken thoughts and emotions left lingering on the dancefloor.

Muller's recent independence has been a period of intense self-discovery. From heartbreak and challenges to embracing her own powerful persona, this new music reflects her growth. The sound is distinctly hers, a journey through the highs and lows of recent years. With a mix of playful moments, raw honesty, and sharp wit, Muller's revitalised vision shines through.

'Breakaway' follows her critically acclaimed debut album, 'Sorry I'm Late', which featured hits like 'I Just Came To Dance', the platinum-certified 'Better Days', and her 2023 Eurovision entry, 'I Wrote A Song'. That album explored the multifaceted female experience through her own stories, addressing dating, relationships, and the everyday frustrations of young women. With this new single, Mae Muller is setting the stage for an exciting new chapter, one where she's firmly in control of her narrative.
