Emerging from the vibrant Brisbane music scene, Tommy Sexton bursts onto the scene with his debut single, 'Start Again', a soulful disco track that's guaranteed to get you moving. And as if that wasn't enough, he's also dropped a bonus B-side, the equally infectious 'La La La!'
Imagine the musical lovechild of Stevie Wonder and Steely Dan, raised on a steady diet of D'angelo, Herbie Hancock, Earth Wind and Fire, and Toto. That's the kind of eclectic sonic landscape Tommy Sexton inhabits. He effortlessly blends soul, disco funk, and a touch of "post-apocalyptic yacht rock" into a sound that's both wild and wonderful, smooth as butter, and sweet as honey.
'Start Again' is a bright, colourful dancefloor-filler that evokes the euphoric feeling of coming back from the brink. Tommy describes it as "a sudden current to the heart," using the metaphor of a heart attack victim needing that jolt to reignite.
"It started as a spark of inspiration while I was washing the dishes," Tommy explains. "It was a process of uncovering what was inside my head, forming words to a melody that I found myself humming." The result is a track that encourages you to "dance your troubles away" and embrace renewal.
But the party doesn't stop there. 'La La La!' arrives as a bonus track, a slower, more sensual groove that's still dripping with soul. "Unlike the layered process of 'Start Again', this one came out red hot," Tommy says. Recorded live at Yama-Nui Studio, the song captures a raw sexual energy that ignited the band. "Everyone in the band got a little hotter after they laid this down!" Tommy confesses.
The release of 'Start Again' is accompanied by a stunning, glitzy, Studio 54-inspired music video featuring Tommy and his glamorous ensemble performing in a colourfully-lit bar. It's a visual feast that perfectly complements the song's vibrant energy.
Tommy Sexton is no stranger to the music scene. A veteran of Brisbane's music community, he started his journey as a bass-playing teen in jazz bands in the early 2000s. He later explored reggae and honed his vocal harmonies with groups like The Melotonins and Laneous & The Family Yah. Now, leading his outfit Tommy Sexton & The Suggestions, he's stepping into the spotlight, ready to shine.
To celebrate his studio debut, Tommy Sexton & The Suggestions will embark on an extensive tour across Australia, bringing their infectious energy to audiences in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia.
