Angus Legg Shares Heartfelt New Single 'Two Birthdays'

Melbourne's Angus Legg has unveiled 'Two Birthdays', a stripped-back, emotionally charged track that dives deep into the complex world of childhood and familial shifts. It's a poignant exploration of parental separation, told through the raw, unfiltered perspective of an eight-year-old. Legg's new single isn't just a personal reflection; it's an offering of understanding and solidarity for anyone who's navigated the choppy waters of a family breaking apart.

'Two Birthdays' zeroes in on a topic often overlooked: the experience of children during divorce. Legg acknowledges this common yet under-discussed trauma. He says, “'Two Birthdays' is for children of divorce, often a forgotten topic and trauma, sadly because it’s all too common." For Legg, writing the song was a cathartic process, a way to articulate the difficult conversations that shape a child's world.

"Creating this track was not only a delve into the depths of my own experience, but it felt like an emotive and direct way to frame one of the most difficult conversations any adult has to have and child has to respond to.” The emotional weight of the subject matter is palpable, with Legg admitting, "I remember after writing this song I cried for a good twenty minutes. I cry when I write most of my music, that’s how I know it’s good, and there were puddles for ‘Two Birthdays’.”

The track's production, helmed by San Joseph, a fellow Melbourne artist, adds layers of depth and texture to Legg's vulnerable lyrics. Legg praises Joseph's creative input, saying, “San Joseph is a creative well, the depths of which I fortunately get to bear the fruits of. The devil is in the detail, there are countless moments throughout ‘Two Birthday’s’ infrastructure worth paying careful attention. He marries this with creating a perfect bed for the emotion and sonicity of the story, which creates an effortless space for the message of the music. He’s also my best pal, so we had a blast throughout the process.” Hayden Lauerson handled the mixing, and Steve Smart of 301 Mastering put the final polish on the track.

Building on the momentum of his previous releases, like 'Dopamine' and 'Drugs With My Friends', which garnered attention from Triple J and major streaming platforms, Legg's latest single is poised to resonate deeply with listeners. His ability to blend intimate storytelling with an acoustic indie sound has solidified his position as a rising talent in the Australian music scene.

Ultimately, 'Two Birthdays' is a deeply personal offering from Legg. As he states, “I hope ‘Two Birthdays’ can make you feel something, there’s a piece of me in this song.” It's a song that invites listeners to connect with their own experiences, offering a moment of shared understanding and emotional release.
