Wafia, the Netherlands-born, LA-based alt-pop artist, has finally released her debut album, 'Promised Land,' a project executive produced by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Sabrina Claudio. This highly anticipated album features a collection of tracks that explore themes of displacement, survival, and the migrant experience, offering listeners a glimpse into Wafia's personal journey.
'Promised Land' is a testament to Wafia's resilience and hope, drawing from her experiences as a queer Arab woman who faced frequent moves, periods of homelessness, and Islamophobia during her upbringing. The album's title, inspired by her mother's belief that "everything is already written," reflects a sense of peace and acceptance amidst life's uncertainties.
"'Promised Land' is defined to me by what is meant for you will be, and nothing that’s meant for you can be taken away," Wafia explains. "It’s the seeds of hope that come with immigration and major change. It looks like a place of optimism and bounty and nourishment - like stepping into your older sister’s garden or home, where you’ll be comforted and mothered and tended to. It’s a hopeful sanctuary for when you need it most."
The album's creation was a collaborative and intimate process, with Wafia working closely with executive producer Sabrina Claudio. "I couldn’t imagine making the album any other way," Wafia says, emphasising the importance of their connection.
Claudio echoes this sentiment, sharing, "Within a month we created Promised Land. We spent every day working together. We laughed, cried, ate (a lot), spilled piping hot tea, danced, flea marketed, the girls were bonding!!! I knew we'd inevitably become close during this process, but this is a bond I've not experienced as a woman with another artist… Waf, thank you for trusting me."
'Promised Land' not only celebrates hope but also stands as a symbol of survival. Wafia's unique ability to tap into the human experience sets her apart. Her previous successes, including her 2015 cover of Mario's 'Let Me Love You' and the recognition from artists like Pharrell Williams, Jaden Smith, and Kylie Jenner, have paved the way for this momentous debut.
With nearly two million Spotify monthly global listeners and a recent signing with Nettwerk Music Group, Wafia's star continues to rise. 'Promised Land' is a powerful and moving body of work that solidifies her position as a distinctive voice in the alt-pop world.
