Rising Talent XIMERMJ Talks About His Journey From Grungy Venues to ‘Online Persona’

In the heart of Buffalo, New York, a new musical force is beginning to make his mark. John Richner, better known by his enigmatic stage name XIMERMJ, is not just another DJ spinning tracks on a night out, but a new creative talent striving to make  a positive impact in the industry.

From his early days attending grungy concerts at the age of 15 to his current status as an emerging artist with a year of releases under his belt, XIMERMJ has experienced the highs and lows of the music world. He opens up about his creative process, the challenges he's faced, and his aspirations for the future. So, let's dive into the mind of XIMERMJ and uncover the stories behind the music.

Great to speak with you again, it’s no surprise that after ‘Transcend’, we couldn’t wait to get to know more about your story and music.

When did you first start making music? Where did it all begin, and what inspired you?

“One sentence, just to prove this, but I was 15 at my grungy local downtown concert venue watching Flyleaf live. I have no idea how they even allowed me entry. That was badass, and won’t ever forget that because of the fact they are no longer a band… I will forever cherish moments like that even if I was fifteen. I’m 28 now, and here we are, and I’m speaking about it. Music has been my life since I can remember - ejecting cassettes from an old Buick when getting me from school. It’s in my veins.”

Your last single cut a unique path, and it’s been gaining traction online. Do you have another project in the works you can tell us about?

“Yes, but I try to not gate-keep, 'cause it’s odd, but I fear that this will be gone before I know it, because my luck of the odds is owned by the house. I am going for that feeling of being behind a deck and feeling such a rush that it just feels almost like you’re flying a plane, and you have control of everybody and everything at once and that’s the best feeling to feel personally in my eyes.”

Are there any artists, moments, or experiences that influenced you when writing the project?

“Early pop music, the music you would hold onto like it was gold whilst letting your Myspace friends see it on your engraved profile. My head has always thought pop music was the only way but now days I’m being more open to music.. but the core value and influence is that euro pop dance all night vibes.”

What is your songwriting process? How does a new track come together?

“It’s basically just what comes to me when I’m going through my hardest times. That’s what pushes me to push myself daily, to show I am capable, and not just some person trying to be something I am not.”

What’s the most important thing when you’re writing a song?

“Beats per minute (or second) and making sure it falls into the odd categories, because I’d rather stick out than stand in.”

How would you describe the sound of your latest release? Has there been a change or evolution in style since you first began?

“I’m just starting but, there’s been a shift just alone with the pandemic and leaving the at-home shows at home and bringing more people out to real shows.”

Is there a central message or theme you were trying to convey in your music?

“Not yet, but I’m sure it will come to me. For now, I’d say probably around 2 and 1/2 / 4 of the song is my favourite tone and it ends very well.”

Do you have any advice to give to bands and artists who are just starting and trying to find their sound?

“Listen to others and learn, even if you think you’re good, to not have to challenge yourself - then what’s the point of it all?”

What has been your best moment as a musician or band so far?

“Being called an online persona lol, but he was polite when he said it so that’s fine and very unexpected.”

Is there anything you would like to say to our audience?

“Thank you for the real making of music; I’m ready for you all to hear it!”
