Sydney surf-rockers Slim Jimz have unleashed their much-anticipated second EP, 'Don't Keep Quiet', a vibrant collection showcasing their sonic evolution. The EP features the recently released single 'R.I.P' and the standout track 'You Must Be Right'.
'You Must Be Right' is a high-energy highlight, demonstrating the band's tight musicianship and vocalist Ben Roach's punchy delivery. Its fast-paced groove and rap-rock influences signal a departure from Slim Jimz's indie-rock roots.
"Writing this song was a lot of fun because we were experimenting with a style we hadn't taken on before," Roach explains. "It's taking influences from rap and fast paced rock."
Lyrically, the track delves into Roach's personal struggles with relationship conflict and the frustration of feeling unheard. The EP as a whole explores themes of mental health, relationship challenges, and embracing change.
Roach emphasises the importance of self-expression: "If something is affecting you it’s important to speak up about it and not let it eat away at you from the inside...While some of the songs on the EP were written about relationship issues that have affected me, other songs concern the difficulties surrounding moving into new phases of life."
The band collaborated with producer Jack Nigro (DMA's, Pacific Avenue) for most of the EP, achieving a crisp, polished sound. They experimented with diverse songwriting techniques and genres, resulting in a compellingly eclectic mix of tracks.
Slim Jimz have built a solid reputation on the Australian live circuit, sharing stages with the likes of South Summit and The Vanns. They've also garnered radio play from triple j, triple J Unearthed, and community stations. 'Don't Keep Quiet' solidifies their place as a rising force in the Australian indie scene.
