Melbourne-based outfit Twins Sport continue to enchant with the unveiling of latest music video for ‘Honey Bee’, a standout track from their acclaimed debut album, 'Acquiescence.'
Set for release on the 1st of August, but premiering exclusively with us, the video serves as a visual companion to the song's captivating blend of shoegaze, garage, and alternative influences. It captures the essence of Twins Sport's distinctive sound, a sound that has been meticulously crafted over two years of single releases.
"Honey Bee has evolved as a track for around 8 years before this iteration. It started as a song with zero meaning, general mumbles and a Jesus and Mary Chain style programmed beat” frontman Josh Dawes shared. “One night working through the lyrics Gemma O’Connor and myself finally cracked it, showed it to the band and it just got turned around in time to make it onto the record and eventually the single from the record.”
There are some very real quotes in this song from relationships breaking down ‘plenty more fish in the sea'' and nods to my favourite book In the Skin of a Lion, the epilogue of the novel starts with this incredible quote from the world's oldest piece of literature. I’d been trying to fit it into a song for some time and finally got the opportunity. ‘Grow my hair long and wander the wilderness for you.’"
The video, shot and edited by Brad Martin, reflects the song's duality. Dawes describes it as "relating to the openness and loneliness in the song." The darkness of the visuals contrasts with the track's jangly major key, highlighting the hidden depths beneath the surface.
Josh continued, speaking candidly about the new clip, "The video relates to the openness and loneliness in the song. The track from the outside can be heard as nice and hopeful but the way I wrote it it's not. The contrast of my own meaning for the song to the jangly major key are highlighted in the darkness of the clip. The clip was really quick to make. We didn’t want too much happening, no performance, no special tricks or effects just a clean-cut video that portrays a darker sense to what could be perceived as a positive story."
The eight tracks on 'Acquiescence' showcase the band's ability to seamlessly traverse the sonic landscape. Lush shoegaze atmospheres, reminiscent of Galaxie 500 and Slowdive, intertwine with the raw energy of 80s and 90s alternative, evoking the spirit of The Peep Tempel. Frontman Josh Dawes' dream pop melodies lend a cheerful accessibility, resulting in a sound that is both ethereal and grounded.
