Tyler Costolo, the musician behind the shifting sonic projects Two Meters and Ghost Fan Club, is set to unveil a new self-titled EP under the latter moniker. This release marks a return to the introspective slowcore and bedroom pop territory that initially launched Ghost Fan Club in 2020.
While fans last encountered Costolo's harsher, metal-tinged Two Meters work in 2022, the upcoming 'Ghost Fan Club' EP promises a change of pace. The artist describes a period of personal and creative change, a flux that informs the project's lyrical themes.
The 'Ghost Fan Club' EP release is slated for July 5th, arriving via Knifepunch Records, a label Costolo describes as a "gay working-class trans label". Fans eager for a taste of the new material will be treated to two preceding singles, 'Shoulders', which is available now, and 'Now and Then' on June 14th.
Speaking of the new single, Tyler shared, “This is a song trying to make peace with my own inner sadness. I’m prone to depression and sleepless nights. The line “I tried to kill myself before I was born” is true in a round about way. I was completely wrapped in the umbilical cord and was suffocating. I was basically dark purple when I was born due to a lack of oxygen.”
"This EP is about depression, grief, feeling unstable, and the time you lose because of these things," says Costolo. These heavier emotional explorations are woven through a soundscape reminiscent of Ghost Fan Club's earlier releases, like the 2021 EP 'Goodbye World, Hello Ghosts'. However, the addition of drummer Tom Morris hints at a newfound energy and drive beneath the familiar softness.
