Dave Monks – ‘Change Your Mind’

After continuing to expand on his solo career with last month’s ‘Wild Like Me’, Tokyo Police Club’s Dave Monks is back with another new single and another enjoyable DIY video. Taken from his new solo album, ‘I’ve Always Wanted to Be Me’, which is slated for release this October, the new single is another upbeat number filled with passion and optimism, perfectly building off the stage set by his previous singles.

The perfect soundtrack to a lazy Summer day, ‘Change Your Mind’ is bright, fun-loving, and purpose-built to melt away any stress you might be feeling. Alongside the new single, Dave has also revealed another enjoyable video, which sees him making his way through Toronto, seeing the sights, and meeting up with fellow Tokyo Police Club member Graham Wright.

Speaking of the new song, Dave explained, “Even though this is a romantic song, I’m happiest about the optimism it captures. I start off by saying ‘I’m a fine young man…’ and the positivity doesn’t let up from there – there isn’t even a single minor chord in the song! I feel like that spirit has been my greatest asset over the years. I always have to believe that something good and surprising can come from putting something into the world. It’s what keeps me excited about my little musical garden.”

“After ‘Wild Like Me’ I was very keen to do another DIY video,” Monks adds. “My only plan was to do fun stuff and vlog it with the hopes I could tie it together in the edit (video editing is my ‘sourdough bread’ of the pandemic). It felt like doing a school project and trying to sneak in as many laughs as possible. And for the record, I do not play basketball on the reg and yes Graham lives down the street from me!”

The new track accompanies the previously released singles perfectly, echoing the newfound joy that Dave has shone in the bedroom-pop stylings of ‘Sweet’, and the almost-viral dance antics of ‘Wild Like Me’.

‘I’ve Always Wanted To Be Me’ will be released on October 15th via Dave’s own label, Ghost Pepper Records.
