DIIV unveil a surprise collaboration in their new video for 'Brown Paper Bag'

Alternative rock band DIIV, consisting of Andrew Bailey, Colin Caulfield, Ben Newman, and Zachary Cole Smith, are gearing up for the release of their fourth studio album, 'Frog in Boiling Water', on May 24th, 2024, via Fantasy Records. Fueling the excitement, the band recently dropped a surprise performance video for their new single, 'Brown Paper Bag' featuring Limp Bizkit frontman, Fred Durst.

The album's creation, a four-year journey helmed by producer Chris Coady, pushed DIIV to their limits. With the goal of expanding their sound, the band embraced a democratic approach, challenging themselves both individually and collectively. This exploration strained their relationships, unearthing complex dynamics of family, friendship, financial concerns, and personal anxieties. Despite the hardships, they persevered, resulting in ten powerful tracks that delve deeper lyrically and musically. The album's cohesive theme resonates through both its lyrics and soundscapes, offering a captivating reflection on perseverance and the complexities of navigating life's challenges.

'Frog in Boiling Water' stands as a testament to resilience, urging listeners to envision a future while acknowledging the present realities. It's a mesmerizing exploration of enduring the "slowly heating water" of life. 'Frog in Boiling Water' both the title and the themes of the record, reference “The Boiling Frog” in Daniel Quinn’s The Story of B. The band explains, “If you drop a frog in a pot of boiling water, it will of course frantically try to clamber out. But if you place it gently in a pot of tepid water and turn the heat on low, the frog will sink into a tranquil stupor, exactly like one of us in a hot bath, and before long, with a smile on its face, it will unresistingly allow itself to be boiled to death.”

Daniel continued, “We understand the metaphor to be one about a slow, sick, and overwhelmingly banal collapse of society under end-stage capitalism, the brutal realities we’ve maybe come to accept as normal. That’s the boiling water and we are the frogs. The album is more or less a collection of snapshots from various angles of our modern condition which we think highlights what this collapse looks like and, more particularly, what it feels like.”
