Imogen Clark - 'If I Want In'

  • 1 min read

Australian singer-songwriter Imogen Clark prepares for the release of her upcoming album by dropping an Americana-tinged indie sad-bop with a message, 'If I Want In'.

Lyrically the song recalls growing up in what feels like a dead-end town with the big city and bigger dreams just on the horizon. Though Clark may sing of rehab – asking ‘is it better than worse than marriage?’ – the song does have an aspirational message overall. Recorded at the iconic Abbey Road, this tale of small-town life and big, big ambitions will resonate with fans of Bruce Springsteen and Ashley McBryde alike.

There’s a lot of personal perspective here, with lyrics inspired by Clark’s early musical experiences: going to high school by day and playing bars at night. “I always dreamed of running away into the big wide world; the London of the Jam, the California of Joni Mitchell, the New Jersey of Bruce Springsteen,” says Clark. “This song is about knowing my hometown made me who I am, but it made me a person who had to leave it to realise her dreams.”

'If I Want In' is out now and can be streamed on Apple MusicTidal, and Spotify and is available to download on Bandcamp. For more from Imogen as she gears up to release her highly anticipated new album, be sure to check out her social media pages below.
